Does your dog need a multivitamin? Probably not

Does your dog need a multivitamin

Complete dog foods sold in the UK are formulated against FEDIAF nutritional guidelines. That is the whole point of the word complete: the food is designed to supply everything a healthy adult dog needs, without anything else on top.

If your dog eats a complete food and is well, a multivitamin is not filling a gap. Most of what you add to a diet that is already adequate is either stored or excreted, and the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K, are the ones you can genuinely overdo.

There are diets where a multivitamin earns its place. Home cooked food, unless it was built with a nutritionist, is usually short somewhere. Raw feeding varies enormously by supplier. A fussy eater who leaves half the bowl is not eating a complete diet whatever the bag says. Dogs on long term restricted diets for medical reasons are worth a conversation with your vet.

That is the honest version, and it costs us sales. Our finder is built to say no to Daily when someone tells us their dog is on complete food, because recommending it anyway would be the easiest sale on the site and the least defensible one.

Written by the Brighter team and checked against the published evidence. Nothing here replaces a vet. If your dog is unwell, see one.
